Courageous Coaching Conversation with Zaretta Hammond

This discussion with Zaretta Hammond is an opportunity to surface our collective observations and think about what still remains hidden from us with regard to equity and student learning.

The framing question we are asking as we move deeper into distance learning:

How do we minimize widening achievement gaps? The answer begins with understanding this algorithm: “Learning gaps lead to opportunity gaps which manifest as achievement gaps.” If this is true, we have to focus on strengthening students’ natural learning ability by leveraging a set of small but high-leverage culturally responsive practices. As such:

  • What are the design principles of “culturally responsive instruction” versus multicultural education and social justice education?
  • What are practices that work across disciplines that will help to not only minimize learning loss but set students up for acceleration?
