A social worker by background, Maria Loy is currently a culture and climate coach at Franklin Elementary School. Between 2014 and 2018, she worked at Hawthorne Elementary School where she met Rosa Thompson. Together, they supported racial equity work through the creation of the Oya Sisters, a program that pulls in concepts of circle practice, humble inquiry, and student voice. Loy is now utilizing the knowledge she gained through the Oya Sisters to support Franklin Elementary School in the development of universal systems that support students’ feelings of belonging, sense of community, and safety.
